Our Call to Action; A Call for Our Planet

With 8 million tonnes of plastic entering the ocean each year, we urgently need to rethink the way we make, use, and reuse plastics.

The stats are alarming:

  • By 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish.
  • Some 18 billion pounds of plastic waste flows into the oceans every year from coastal regions.
  • 40 percent of plastic produced is packaging is used just once and then discarded.
  • Shoppers in the United States use almost one plastic bag per resident per day. (By contrast shoppers in Denmark use an average of four plastic bags a year.)
  • Nearly half of all plastic ever manufactured has been made since 2000.
  • Less than a fifth of all plastic is recycled globally.
  • Nearly a million plastic beverage bottles are sold every minute around the world. In 2015 Americans purchased about 346 bottles per person the equivalent of 111 billion plastic beverage bottles in total.
  • About 8 percent of the world’s oil production is used to make plastic and power the manufacturing of it. That figure is projected to rise to 20 percent by 2050.
  • 90 climate scientists from 40 countries conclude that if humans don’t take immediate collective action to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius by 2040 the consequences will effectively be baked into the natural systems of the planet. (NRDC)
