Client:
Whole Foods Market, the premier food retailer of natural and organic products in the US. The company is consistently ranked among the most socially responsible businesses. In 2008 WFM made the bold move to ban plastic bags in all its stores in the US and Europe.
Problem:
The reusable bags WFM had developed were not the right size to fit the cake & pastry boxes customers received their bakery purchases in.
Singer Sustainability was approached by WFM Regional Bakery leadership to address this packaging challenge.
Solution:
Singer Sustainability developed a colorful, fun, message-based bag that would fit cake and pastry boxes used by any bakery in the chain. The bags fit WFM’s criteria of only using sustainable materials for its new packaging. These bags are manufactured of recycled plastic bottles.
In the first region, the initial run of bags sold out within 3 weeks. WFM is now on its 3rd order in 3 months. Based on the immediate success of this program, this bakery bag will be rolled out into other WFM regions nationally.
